News by PiggyYiXin

Starting from now, I will be writing some comments on the news that are really HOT in the nation or in the world. No harm will be done I guess. It's just some of my own comments or rather I should say my thinking about the problems happening in the world. Starting on now, I will be writing using my pen name of PiggyYiXin instead of my real name.

Being joined in the Introductory of Journalism class, I feel that I really learned a lot of stuff about being able to write an article and all. But, starting form now, this blog will be on about the articles itself and a lot more other stuff like sharing of music and video, comments on almost everything.

It won't be updated frequently as I am still a university student and I have to manage my schedule on my classes and exam. Well, not that anyone is on this blog reading what I've wrote. It would not be as fancy as the bloggers but I will try my very best to be like it.. Just trying to.

Well, this is just a short post. Please do feel free to visit my other blog under my personal name, http://mylittlediary-diary.blogspot.com....

Summary of the Semester

Well, I guess this is the last post for now. It was a really fun semester to go through with because I was really terribly busy with all my uni stuff and this is a part of it. So yeah. For today's post, our lecturer's question was to post up a summary to the subject that you have studied for the whole semester, which is Introduction to Journalism and we are also to give an opinion on privilege and challenges of being a journalist. It seems sentimental as this is one of my favourite subject for the whole semester. I really do enjoy being in the class.

So about my summary. I will be talking about week after week of lessons.

  • First week, there were nothing much. Just that the lecturer gave us some time to know about our friends around us. The activity that she gave us is that we have to pick out a coin, and look at the year on the coin. Then we have to ask our friend about what happened on the year of their coin. Well, my partner was Jonathan Christopher Wood. He was a long friend of mine. Counted long as we met during our foundation year and we were on our first assignment together.
  • On the Second week, we started off with the first lecture which is about what is journalism and what a journalist do and everything. The tutorial was based on a movie DayBreak. Well, if you wanna know more, here is the link http://bemyguesseveryday.blogspot.com/2014/05/daybreak.html
  • On the Third week, our lesson was on chapter 2 and it was about the roles and principles of a journalism. For the tutorial, we did an opinion based tutorial on our blog and we were asked to talk about the comic strip in our lecture slides. Assignment 1 was released on this week and the assignment was about summarizing an article and talks on whether the article have the principles of journalism.
  • On the forth week, we were taught on the third chapter, Style of news and news element. Not much to talk about. The assignment 2 was released on this week. The assignment two, was quite simple. We were asked to find a sensational article and see whther the article have all the principles of journalism or not.
  • On the Fifth Week, we were taught on the forth chapter, basic news reporting. We learned on how to write like a journalist. The inverted pyramid style and the 5W1H.
  • On Sixth week, we were taught on the Fifth chapter, writing an interview. The third assignment was released on this week. We were asked to interview a single person who have great achievements and everything to inspire us to work harder. I chose two of my best friends, Kah Yung and Zhi Hong for the interview.
  • On the Seventh week, it was the rest week. We were asked to watch a movie, Never Been Kissed in class and write a blog post for tutorial for it.
  • On the eighth week, it was the submission of assignment 3 and release of assignment 4. We submitted the assignment 3 and the assignment 4 was announced on that day itself.
  • On the ninth week, we were taught on the chapter 6, which is News paper and Types of newspaper. This was the last chapter taught and this week was the submission of assignment 4. After this week was all about presentation and releasing the Final Project.
Well, that is about what I've gone through for the whole semester. It was fun studying in this class.  So the privileges of being a journalist is depending on what type of journalist you wanna be. For instance, travel journalist. Being a travel journalist, you are able to go out to all around the world, free of charge. All expenses paid for by the company. That is the privilege that we might get. But for the challenges, I think it would be the deadlines and all the shouting from your editors. Being a journalist, we do have a lot of deadline that we need to catch up and if we were not able to do it, we will be shouted by our editors. That we have to keep in mind.

For me, my pathway next time will not be a journalist. It is too stressful for me to handle. But I still enjoy being in the class and everything. I learned a lot about journalism where I did not know anything about it before. I thank my lecturer for giving us such a wonderful time in class. Thank you very much. :)

Tutorial 8: Investigative Reporting and the Acts of Ethics, Case study on movie 'Never Been Kissed'

Well, as the title can tell, today's topic is about investigative reporting and the acts of ethics, case studying on the movie 'Never Been Kissed' which the lead actress was Drew Barrymore. Well, If you guys didn't know about it, here's a pic of the movie.

This movie talks about a lady, which name was Josie Geller. Josie was a copy editor for a certain newspaper and on one particular day, she was asked to write an article, being undercover, about high school student and to help the parents to be more aware of their children's life. She was asked to go to South Glen South High School and her days there were miserable. To cut the story short, she was awarded as the prom queen, she became famous, she was at the peak of what every youth wanted, being popular. At last, she told her friends about her being a journalist and then later confessed to the literature teacher that she loves him and will wait him at the baseball court for the kiss that she is waiting for.

Well, in the middle of the movie, she was asked to put on a  hidden camera wherever she go and it camera was on her shirt in the form of a shirt pin. So, this is what we are going to talk about today. Investigative reporting and acts of ethics. The discussion is about is investigative reporting  unethical?

For my answer, I could say that it surely depends on the story that one is writing about. If it is about those story on very serious like the current news, what use is there for people to go undercover and investigate deeply back on what they are doing? Just do a normal research and then you will get what you want. There is no need to go till that being undercover. And secondly, being investigative reporting, you will hurt someone in the process. For example, you are trying to get some story about a girl that died in the toilet. You went and investigate about the murderer and the results is that you found another similar case done by the same person on another victim and you went and ask her and made her recall back her bad memory that she is trying to forget. Does that sound ethical? I don't think so.

Being a reporter, we must know where our limit lies. Yes, the people deserve to know the truth but is there a need for people to know every single thing even the bad once where you have to leave your ethics out to get those information? And other than that, we must be ethical of what we does. Know where you ethics lies. Don't over exceed that limit that you set for yourself.

In the movie, they made Josie to wear a camera so that the whole company could know what she is going on and secondly, to give her stories to write. But, being that, is not ethical. The whole company could see her private moments like what is she were flirting with guys to get information, or what if she was in the toilet and the whole company sees all her parts? That is totally unethical. But in a way, the company could monitor her actions so that she could be safe and not be bullied by people around the school.

So for my answer, investigative reports, yes we can have it but make sure that it is ethical and it is under the limit that we set for ourselves.

Tutorial 6: Principal to Interview

In today's post, we are going to talk about principals of interview. In our lesson, we learned about there are 4 principles of interview as like: Research, Rapport, Question and Listening. We will discuss on this four things.

So for research, before every interview, we need to do some homework as like looking the basic information of the interviewee and we have to really do some detailed research on the topics that we are going to talk on. Interviewing is a way for us journalist to get information from. Interviewing is like looking for more additional information for the things that we already had. For example, the one we interview might have a very bad past. So we have to be careful when we are interviewing them by looking through their personal biography and looking at their past. For another example, we wanted to do a piece on a very rich lady who have a good career behind her. So before it we will already have some information so by interviewing, we will get information that is more precise from the lady.

Next up is Rapport. Rapport is said that we as journalist or normal humans should have empathy towards people who we are in communicating with. When we are interviewing someone which is in pain, we should not just blindly ask them about how they are feeling. Of course they will feel sad and bad but we must know that they are suffering in the depth of their heart. For example, MH370 event had been 4 months from now and nothing had been found. And being a reporter, we must change the way of us asking question from "Your family is still missing, how do you feel" to "I'm sorry to hear for your lost. How are you feeling?". The first one is like too straight where people will think of the loved once. But in the second one, they might think of them but they will feel better if they know that you have empathy.

The third one is that Question. Every interview is impossible to go on without a set of question list. Before going to an interview, prepare a set of question based on what you had found out and try and imagine the answer from the people. You will find out a lot of things whether that question will be offending them or not, or you will also find out that that question is open-ended or close-ended. Being in an interview, the question is better to be Open-ended than close-ended as if you asked close-ended question you will not get more detailed answer. There are also the direct question and the intrusive question. Direct question, as like it said, it should be direct. Directly straight to the point. These type of question is frequently ask by news reporter. And lastly is the intrusive question. The intrusive question normally will be asked about the interviewer's private life and their family. Before asking these kind of question, it is our courtesy to ask the interviewer whether it would be off record or not. They might not want it to be posted in the news paper or the article that one wrote.

Lastly, we have the listening. By listening, we do really mean listen and not hear. By hearing, we absorb each and every sound in the surrounding and process it in our brain but by listening, we do it in the sense of that we absorb one particular sound in very direct and very focus way so that we would not leave out anything. So being an interviewee, we must be very proficient on listening. By this, I really do mean on listening. Be listening to each and every sentence, we would not leave out anything in particular. We have to listen to it whether it is boring or not. In any situation, they might speak of grandfather and grandmother stories but what should we do? Just hear and do not listen? No. We must listen to every little particular that they said. Maybe in the grandmother stories that they told you would be your main point you also would not know. Being a journalist is not about good in writing and good and asking and being a smart mouth. We as journalist also have to be a good listener.

So, being an interviewer is not an easy job. Although it is hard but it is worth it.

Tutorial 4: 2 news pegs with only main point

This week, we are going to discuss on two hottest news currently. First, we are going to talk on the phone that XiaoMi developed, Mi 3 and the second, we are going to talk on the panda coming to Malaysia.

The main points of the current hottest smart phone in market are:

  • It was created by XiaoMi, a China company.
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 8274AB 2.3GHz processor, Adreno 330 450MHz GPU, 2GB LPDDR3 RAM, and eMMC 4.5 flash memory.
  • 5-inch IPS display. Full HD at 16:9.
  • 13MP camera with dual-LED flash.
  • 8.1mm thin, 145 grams light, and houses an aluminum-magnesium alloy frame, coated with 3 layers of thermal graphite.
  • 4.2 KitKat Operating system.
Those are the specs of XiaoMi M3. On my opinion, it is now the current best phone that we could get in the market. It is cheap and it is very powerful as the Samsung Galaxy S5, iPhone 5s, HTC One M8, Google Nexus 5 and many more. It is counted as the cheapest phone and it was as cheap as RM800 and it won't go till like RM 1000. It is indeed a great phone to use and it has a lot of color theme to choose from, like blue, yellow, silver and black and pink and etc.

Next, the topic that we are going to talk on is, *drumrolls* PANDA!!

As we all know, panda are all cute and big and huge and yeah, everything you can think of for a bear.
The actual size of a panda is like smaller than a bear but larger than a tiger or lion.

These two was the baby panda that was sent to our country. So the main attraction of these two panda coming are:

  • Both the pandas are 8 years old.
  • This loan is the representation of Malaysia-China great relationship for 40 years.
  • Two experts from China that took care of FuWa and FengYi from their birth will be accompanying them for the duration of their stay.
  • In the flight coming to Malaysia, a vet was there to accompany the pandas.
  • They both arrived on 20th of May.
  • The complex for the Panda costs RM 25 Million.
  • FengYi weighted 102 kg and FuWa weighted 120 kg.
  • Normal panda size are 1.5 m long and 75cm height when they are crawling.
  • They both recieved MM2H visa where they were the first one to receive it and they were the first to receive it.

Well, basically, pandas are cute and they could be very adorable at times. But for those who wanted to meet up with FuWa and FengYi, you have to pay RM 50 for both the entrance fee of the zoo and the admission fee of the panda complex.

Should Children be sent to tuitions and class at early age?

Living in the current world nowadays, we have a lot of issues that regards to our daily life, our home, our country, ourselves and our friends. Today, what we are going to talk about is very early child education. This piece of article is based on all my own opinion. We know that in a human life, childhood is always very very fun and happy. It's the most stress free stage in our life. That was back then. But what happened now? Now, children were send to all sorts of tuitions for their 'so called future'. Well, we will discuss more on that. But, before everything, let's picture what childhood meant to you. For me, well, like what many people said, picture worth a thousand words, here is what my childhood looks like.

Isn't it beautiful? Well, it is. Every childhood should be as beautiful as the picture above shown. But, now, children do not have time to go out and play. They have to study instead of playing with friends or running on the field. They have to go tuitions after tuitions, classes after classes. Infinite number of tuitions and classes for them. But, do the parents think of the happiness of children? Do they feel happy or even do they want to go to that tuition or classes?

Many a times, we human do have peer pressure. Not only for a teenage, a children, an adult but, parents also are being influenced by this. What do I mean by peer pressure? Peer Pressure is defined as influences that a peer group  observer, or an individual exerts that encourage others to change their attitudes, norms, values, or behaviour to conform to other group. This do mean that the parents are having this kind of pressure that their friend's child is going to XXX tuition and so, I also have to send my child there. That is the mindset of current parenting.

Yes, I do agree on that early childhood educations are really important but is it necessary that we send our child to tuition only that they are one years old or two? They still could not speak clearly or for some child, they still could not walk. So what is the purpose that we send them there? Isn't it better if that we take care of them at home and let them be happy at least until four years old? They are still a child, for heaven's sake. Let them have fun at home and look at the growing ups. It is fun to watch. Don't be so 'gia su' for those hockkien said. 'Gia Su' is said as scared of losing.

Another thing that parents often send their child to day care. There is quite a few disadvantage of it. Parents often send their babies to day care so that they could work and earn. It is to support the dropping economics and to sustain the family. Let's stay true to ourselves. Is it more important, Money or Your Child? Often people say that when you have a child, they are your everything. That's the older generations thinking and some of the mothers now still think that way but most of the younger mothers don't think of it this way. They think that money could buy everything, including a child's happiness.

That people should be penalized and should be scolded terribly. Yes, I do not deny the fact that money is important but how can you compare your child, a living thing with money, a non-living thing? Child is cute and they makes us happy all the time. If you would not want the child, so why 'make' them in the first place? Why bring them to this world if you do not love them? Why send them to other place when you have the ability to protect them? It is very funny that most parents hire a nanny to take care of the child for them. It is a great lesson that I've learned from watching the movie "Nanny's Diary".

Being a mother is hard and taking care of a child is even harder. But look at the joy that the children brings to you and your family. Children should be staying at home until they are old enough to go to classes. Let them have a happy life and let them be happy with what they have. Being that does not mean that to spoil them with iPod or iPad but be together with them. Play with them. Love them. Take care of them. Children are angels that were brought down from the heaven. That what I always believe in.

Opinions on comic

So, for today's topic, we will be discussing about this short comic above. Journalist's equipments are being smashed and everything and even the journalist are not safe while doing their jobs. They could be killed any time. So in my opinion, the reason why journalist are being tortured like this is because of that they wrote about the truth which is a part of their job. People doesn't like the truth to be revealed and when it is revealed, they tries to cover it up. Just to cover up all these takes a lot of money, energy and time. So the easiest way to cover it up, it to stop the journalist to not write about all these ugly truth.

There is a reason why truth is called ugly. When we are famous, no matter what we do or say is being watched by everyone. So, it is not easy for us to be extra careful so that everything could go right. We have to think of the right thing to say and when we say the wrong thing, people tend to scold us and call us hypocrite and it is those journalist who recorded what we say and what we do.

And not only that, sometimes, it is the journalist to blame. They just make stories up just because they wanted to pull their ratings up. By making stories, they could offend a lot of people like the politician, the celebrities and even the normal citizens who have no skills of defending all these. What could we do to defend ourselves from all these things? Firstly is that we need to mentally prepared so that when these things comes, we could know what to do and we could think of a better way to settle things.

Not only that the journalist to be blamed, but also the people themselves. People will do stuff like 'illegal stuff' and they do it in the dark. When people find out, you threaten people. What use of that? Why do things that could not be shown in the light when you have the choice not to? People sometimes do things that they think it is right but actually it is wrong. They must be preventive enough. Before doing everything, make sure of the consequences. A very good example is that by playing Sudoku. You can't be guessing what is the next number to put. There is always a number set to put it at a place. If you are just guessing, you will find the wrong answer and you can't solve everything right. Life is like playing Sudoku. If you guess, you will never be correct. Make sure everything that we do is legal and it will not put us in jail.

To sum everything up, both sides have wrong and right. We just need to know what is right to do and what is wrong. Decide on things that is right and I do mean it, the right thing, not you THINK it is right and then throw away all the wrong thoughts. Never touch the wrong things. Well, that is my opinion on the comic above.. ;)

Daybreak

Becky Fuller, the editor of Daybreak was having a really bad time thinking about what she could do to pull up the rating of the show. She tried a lot of ways like inviting a very professional news reporter and many more but it just won't go up. Daybreak is the show early in the morning for the viewers to know what is happening around the world in a more entertaining way, aside from the news. So this is what I propose, about how to increase the ratings.

So, a story about a famous actor. This actor is the main character of Twilight Saga series with the character name of Edward Cullen, the love interest of Bella Swan, who was portrayed by Kristin Stewart. He was also in the Harry Potter series with the character name of Cedric Diggory. This actor had 41 awards won under him and a few of them was MTV Movie Award, Teen Choice Award and more. He also had 27 nominations under his name. This actor is, the famous Robert Pattinson. Here's a few picture about him.

This is a Picture of Robert Pattinson.

Another one of him.

If you still don't know who he is, this is the famous, Edward Cullen.

Little did we know about Robert Pattinson, in short Rob. But, Rob was getting more and more famous and his smirky little smile kills a lot of young girls. We hope that we could do a little detail about him, like his family background, what he like and what he didn't like. Now as a Teen's sensation, I think by inviting Robert Pattinson would definitely pull up the ratings of the segment.

There are some fun facts about Rob that we could talk about. In the news from Yahoo, I found out that he had just celebrated his 28th birthday two days ago. On his birthday, EntertainmentWise had 15 fun facts about him and I think by talking it with Robert Pattinson will be fun and it will attract a lot of younger viewer which the love a lot about him.
